lyrics

Those vultures I’d invited, baited, finding feast on my decay
Raised their heads in silence, sated, suddenly to fly away
Abandoned, undecided, aching, blinded, weak, and sore betrayed
My love still unrequited, waiting for that need to dissipate

I laid my soul down… upon the altar of self-destruction
I played the role proud… reveled in my indiscretion
I’ve gotten old now… and I’m scared to meet the slow decline
I thought that somehow… I’d be spared the need to justify
And surprised I find my corpse still breathes with life…
What now?

In days gone by I stood here mocking, derisive of those lesser men
Each one trying to beat the clock seemed comical, beneath contempt
Much older now, look to the past I wonder why I couldn’t see
I wipe the steam off of the glass; my father’s face looks back at me

I laid my soul down… upon the altar of self-destruction
I played the role proud… reveled in my indiscretion
I’ve gotten old now… unprepared, confront the slow decline
I thought that somehow… I had buried all I’d left behind
But instead I find these fears still plague my mind…

Soliloquy:
Time is playing games with me. So much promise, so many years can now be measured in books and plays. It takes its toll every sunrise; a futility embraces me for all I may achieve. My remaining days are just a whisper, soon scattered on the breeze. How do I mark the time left to me? Will I see my children grow? Will I accept my fate with peace or rage before I go? Only now do I see…

I laid my soul down… upon the altar of self-destruction
I played the role proud… reveled in my indiscretion
I’ve gotten old now… just ahead I see the finish line
I thought that somehow… that the game would go to overtime…

Although I jokingly refer to myself as “First Among Equals” at QNP and am deeply involved in all facets at every step of the way I know that can’t do this alone; I am very grateful for the support of my song-specific collaborators and tech-savvy friends. ... more
